There could be many reasons for the issue, but I would start by troubleshooting your LAN. However, the 98% on hop 1 is something strange.Ĭould be a wiring problem, but if that is the case I would think you would see higher packet loss across all hops. I could be wrong, but would really appreciate some constructive feedback.Īll of the other comments here about ping drops at 100% I agree with that they likely are just blocking ICMP requests and are likely nothing to worry about. Replace the patch cable between the two, if the issue persists, try another switch port on the router/switch. Let's say you see good pings to the wireless access point but the router/switch gives you drops/high pings. Replace the patch cable connecting the two, if the issue persists replace the modem or router itself after testing their interfaces independently. Let's say you see good pings from your device to the router, but drops/high pings to the modem. Let's say all your internal pinging up to the modem looks good, next step would be check your connections to the modem (coax/fiber/phone lines) and assuming all that is well, call your internet provider. If you're wired, ping right to the router/switch you're hooked into, then internet addresses and so on. Your internal Network may not be as complicated as mine, but same idea.

At this point I have 6-8 command prompt windows all running, it is usually fairly easy to see where the issue is. Following that, assuming I have internet access, I would ping a few well known websites, Google, Facebook, whatever. Next for me would be my router, then modem. Okay, next thing down the line, in a new command prompt window, ping the switch. Let's say in my home, I have packet loss on a wireless device. Start at the source (your computer) and run a repetitive ping (ping -t ) to the next device down the line. When troubleshooting packet loss, it's like anything else with devices connected to one another.

For example, if you have 0% loss until hop 4, but then have loss all the way to hop 15 (as an example) varying between 5-25% seemingly randomly between all the hops, you're likely experiencing an actual loss of 5% in that scenario. Packet loss on any one hop is not a problem unless it persists all the way to the destination.

If not, you may have a bad cable or an issue with your ISP. If you do, your router needs to be replaced or settings need tweaking. See if you continue to see the same packet loss or intermittent behavior. If you have a separate router and modem or ONT, try plugging directly into the modem/ONT and eliminate the middleman. If you're on a wireless network, try connecting via an Ethernet cable directly to your router. Most routers in between hops may show packet loss from ICMP/ping deprioritization, but your home router should never be overloaded in such a way that would cause this much loss. Based on the loss persisting through hops, you have a minimum of 2-4% packet loss to/from the destination, however, you're seeing 98% loss at your first hop.
